| Bill & Sarah Altland are
1980 graduates of the University of Arkansas Medical School College of
Pharmacy. From there they served as volunteer medical missionaries
in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), Haiti, and at a
missions clinic in Glennallen, Alaska. In 1999, they moved to
Prince of Wales Island and shared the pharmacist job at Alicia Roberts
Medical Center in Klawock. In addition, Bill has periodically
traveled to fill in for pharmacists in other locations, such as
Dillingham, Valdez, Wasilla, Cordova, Bethel, Kodiak, Wrangell,
Metlakatla, Ketchikan and Sitka in Alaska, and in South Dakota.
When they came to POW, the Altlands saw the need for a retail pharmacy and decided Craig is the place where they want to raise their family and be a part of the community. So in April 2001, they opened Whale Tail Pharmacy, located at 300-B Easy Street. Bill & Sarah have this to say about volunteering: "Think about trying something new and non-traditional. Use your expertise to volunteer for something unusual, keep an open mind, and you'll find that you won't regret the experience."
